At Jerwood Gallery, Hastings
Horizons: Kettle’s Yard at Jerwood Gallery
Kettle’s Yard was the Cambridge home of Jim and Helen Ede, who together created an impressive collection of British and European art. During his life, Jim had been a curator at Tate Gallery and described himself as a ‘friend of artists’, acquiring much of his collection through these friendships.
When the Edes retired in 1973 they gave the house to Cambridge University. Now, due to a major capital redevelopment on the property itself, the Kettle’s Yard Collection is available to tour for the first time in its history and comes first to Jerwood Gallery. There are numerous links between the two collections through artists like Ben and Winifred Nicholson, Christopher Wood and Alfred Wallis.
Horizons: Kettle's Yard at Jerwood Gallery opens on 12th September and will not only include important Modern British works, but will also present key European artists in the Edes’ collection.
Rachel Howard: At Sea

This summer we welcome leading British artist, Rachel Howard, to the gallery for her largest solo public gallery exhibition in the UK. Her distinctive, abstract paintings have been globally recognised and are held in many prestigious international art collections. She paints a multitude of human experiences and emotions and, for this exhibition in Hastings, has created a significant body of new work.
“I feel really honoured to be hanging out with the likes of Keith Vaughan, John Hoyland, Walter Sickert and Prunella Clough, whose Back Drop, 1993 bears a strong resemblance to the pattern on the title painting for the show. Though I’d never seen hers before I made mine, so imagine how excited I was when I found it’ Howard said in a recent interview in issue 23 of Elephant magazine. www.elephantmag.com
In addition to the exhibition, Howard has curated a one-room display which showcases some of her favourite works from the Jerwood Collection. Rachel Howard is represented by Blain Southern http://www.blainsouthern.com/. The exhibition continues until 4th October, more info here.

From Britons at play on the sands of holiday resorts, to giant tankers in the great ports of the nation, Lowry painted the sea in many different forms, and this display brings together a wide variety of these exciting works. More info here. The exhibition continues until 1 November.
The Curator of Lowry by the Sea, Victoria Howarth, is giving a free tour of the exhibition on 10th September as part of Heritage Open Days which is supported by Historic England and the National Trust. Details here.
