Jerwood Gallery, Hastings has announced an In Focus display celebrating Stanley Spencer’s 125th anniversary: Stanley Spencer- A Panorama of Life from 15th October 2016 until 8th January 2017.
Jerwood Collection’s Dig For Victory, 1940 a collaboration between Spencer and Daphne Charlton will join paintings, drawings and archive material from Stanley Spencer Gallery, Cookham in this one room exhibition. Dig for Victory was created as a wartime poster for Charlton’s village hall when Spencer stayed nearby. He described his friendship with her as a ‘delightful chapter’ in his life and we feel Charlton’s presence further in this display as she also appears with Spencer in the work Fetching Shoes, and accompanied him on the visit to The Wool Shop recorded here.

Celebrating 15 Years of Jerwood Young Designers
The Gate has one of the most versatile studio spaces in London. September marks 15 years of Jerwood Young Designers which has supported 84 early-career designers to expand their experience through taking central roles in Gate Theatre productions, fulfilling demanding design briefs that always stretch the theatre's intimate performance space.
The designers working on the scheme in 2016/17 are: Cécile Trémolières with Assistant Designer Bex Kemp (The Iphigenia Quartet); Rosana Vize with Assistant Designer Anna Lewis (Diary of a Madman); Sadeysa Greenaway-Bailey (I Call My Brothers) and one more to be announced. We would also like to congratulate Ellen McDougal on her new appointment as Artistic Director at The Gate.
JERWOOD GALLERY, HASTINGS
An exciting International Festival of Contemporary Arts has come to Hastings! Root 1066 is inspired by the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings and celebrations will be spread between Hastings, Battle, Bexhill and Normandy.
Marcus Harvey’s exhibition at Jerwood Gallery, Inselaffe, is part of Root 1066. It includes the leading British artist’s most recent paintings, ceramics and bronze sculptures. The tough but humorous works reflect on Harvey’s concerns of national identity and masculinity. There are special Root 1066 events linked to this exhibition throughout September including An Evening with Marcus Harvey on 30th September, which can be booked here.
Inselaffe continues at Jerwood Gallery until 16th October, Bitten By Picasso and The Painter Behind the Canvas continue until 9th October.
