UBS and LSO Music Education Centre at St Luke's, London
Architects: Levitt Bernstein Associates
Opened in March 2003
The Jerwood Foundation made a grant of £1 million towards London Symphony Orchestra's transformation of Hawksmoor's Grade 1 Listed St Luke's Church in EC1 from a derelict building into a unique education and performing arts venue. Levitt Bernstein Associates carried out the award winning restoration and rebuild and LSO St Luke's, with the Jerwood Hall at its heart, was opened on 27 March 2003 by Baroness Blackstone, Minister for the Arts.
LSO St Luke's, including the Jerwood Hall, is the home of LSO's Discovery education and community programme. The Jerwood Hall provides space for LSO's rehearsals, recordings, masterclasses and recitals, including free lunchtime concerts. It also also hosts regular creative music-making workshops.
London Symphony Orchestra
The London Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1904 and since 1982 has been based in the Barbican Centre. It is dedicated to bringing music to everyone and its new UBS and LSO Music Education Centre at nearby LSO St Luke's is now the UK's leading orchestral music education centre.
The relationship that began with this Capital Project continues to flourish as the Jerwood Charitable Foundation regularly commissions works by the Aurora Orchestra, which premiere at the Jerwood Hall. You can find out more here
